Salman Khan’s debut as a leading actor came with Sooraj R. Barjatya's ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’, which was released in 1989. The movie went on to become one of the most successful films of that time and also got him Filmfare Best Male Debut Award, apart from a nomination for Filmfare Best Actor Award. In 1990, he was seen in ‘Baaghi’, with South Indian actress Nagma, which turned out to be another major hit. The following year, Salman Khan starred in a number of films, including ‘Patthar Ke Phool’, ‘Sanam Bewafa’ and ‘Saajan’. The movie ‘Saajan’ established him as an actor who could perform some serious roles too and helped him move away from the ‘romantic guy’ image. However, the initial success could not guarantee future hits and almost all his 1992-1993 releases turned out to be flops. It was in 1994 that Salman Khan became the king of box office once again, when Sooraj Barjatya’s ‘Hum Aapke Hain Kaun’ hit the theaters. The movie turned out to be one of the highest grossers of all times and also won him his second nomination for Filmfare Best Actor Award. |
